Mehrangarh Fort History

View of Mehrangarh Fort above the blue city of Jodhpur with a local market selling handicrafts in the foreground.

Mehrangarh Fort, located in Jodhpur, is considered the largest fort in India. It stands 410 feet above Jodhpur city. It was built in 1459 by Rao Jodha, ruler of the Rathore dynasty. However, a monk named Cheeriyanath, who had previously lived there, had refused to allow the palace to be built. However, Rao Jodha nevertheless began the process of building the palace. The monk cursed him, saying that Jodhpur would always face a water shortage. As a result, Jodhpur began experiencing a water shortage.

Rao Jodha approached the monk and apologized. The monk offered a solution: a living person must be buried beneath the palace to free it from the curse. To lift this curse, a man named Raja Ram Meghwal sacrificed himself—while still alive—in the foundation of the fort. Later, his family was honored by the king. The fort was attacked numerous times by the Mughals, who captured it. But later the Rathore ruler won this fort again and not just one king contributed in building this fort, many kings contributed in building this fort.

7 Gates Meharangarh Fort

jai Pol:- The Jaypol Gate is the very first entrance encountered at Maidangarh Fort. It was constructed in 1806 by Maharana Man Singh to celebrate his victory over the combined armies of Jaipur and Bikaner. This gate was named ‘Jaypol,’ a name that signifies the ‘Gate of Victory.’

Fateh Pol:- which, too, translates to the “Gate of Victory”—was commissioned by Maharaja Ajit Singh in 1707 AD to celebrate his triumph over the Mughals. Constructed from red sandstone, this gate stands significantly more hard than the other gateways.

Tapt vilas:- It was built by Maharana Tapat Singh Ji and it was his personal room where he lived. It was constructed between 1843 and 1873, hence we get to see Rajasthani British architecture in this room.

Lakhna Pol:- Maharana Abhay Singh Ji commissioned the construction of this gate in the 18th century, with a view to ensuring the security of the fort in the times to come. This gate was built using stone to ensure that it could not be breached. Over the years, it was subjected to attacks by numerous cannons; however, no one was ever able to break through this gate, and even today, the marks left by those cannons remain visible here.

Dedh Kanghra Pol:- Rao Jodha had this very gate constructed in the 15th century with the specific aim of ensuring the security of the palace; situated nearby stands a tower, which was used to detect whether any enemy was attempting to launch an attack on the palace.

Amrit Pol:-This is one of the inner entrances; the gate is fitted with spikes so that, should any enemy army ever attempt an invasion, half of their forces would be eliminated right there due to these spikes.

Loha pol:-This gate has also become a tourist attraction in today’s time because its history is hidden behind it. Here are the handprints of fifteen queens who decided to commit sati after the death of Maharaja Man Singh and in today’s time, there are artists playing Rajasthani music here who play the music of Rajasthan for us.

Suraj Pol:- This is the last gate of the palace which takes us to the museum section inside the Meerangarh Fort and this gate is also considered to be the oldest gate of the fort.rane gate mana jata ha
